What is an Air Release Valve?

An air release valve is a mechanical equipment attached to the pipes for the purpose of releasing the air pockets that develop within the pipes during operation. As water or any fluid moves within the pipe, air bubbles separate from the water and rise up within the pipes at their highest points.

How Does an Air Release Valve Work?

  • Inside the valve body, a float mechanism rises and falls based on internal fluid levels. 

  • As air accumulates and the fluid level drops, the float lowers, opening a small orifice that vents the trapped air. 

  • Once fluid returns to fill the chamber, the float rises again and reseals the orifice, preventing fluid loss.

Types of Air Release Valves Manufactured by SVR Global:


  • Double Orifice Air Release Valve - large orifice for air/vacuum exchange plus a small orifice for continuous air release under pressure

  • Double Orifice Kinetic Air Valve - high volume air exchange for rapid filling or draining, protecting pipelines from surge or vacuum damage
