Globe valves are linear motion valves built for precise flow control, not just shutoff. A disc moves perpendicular to a stationary seat as the stem turns, letting you throttle flow to any position between fully open and fully closed. SVR Global manufactures globe valves in T-pattern, angle, and Y-pattern body styles across a range of pressure classes, sizes, and trim materials for oil and gas, power generation, chemical processing, and marine applications.

Where globe valves are the right choice

  • Precise throttling and flow rate control, not just on/off shutoff

  • Shorter stroke length than a gate valve for the same pipe size, since the disc only needs to clear the seat

  • Good shutoff even after repeated cycling, because the disc and seat contact area stays small and consistent

  • Directional flow control in systems where check-valve behavior is useful (depending on installation orientation)

Globe Valve Body Patterns:

The body pattern determines the flow path geometry and is the single largest factor in a globe valve's pressure drop and installation footprint.

Trim and Seat Materials:

Trim refers to the disc, stem, and seat the parts in direct contact with the flow medium and each other. Because the disc contacts the seat on every cycle, trim wear is one of the most common reasons a globe valve loses shutoff over time.

Common trim combinations:

  • Stainless steel trim (e.g., 13% Cr, 316 SS): general corrosion resistance across a wide range of media

  • Stellite faced (hardfaced) trim: a cobalt based hardfacing alloy applied to the disc and seat contact surfaces, chosen for high cycle, high temperature, or erosive service where a plain stainless trim would wear quickly

  • Hardened trim (e.g., 17-4PH): used where galling resistance matters, such as high pressure steam

  • Soft seated trim (PTFE, PEEK, or elastomer inserts): gives bubble tight shutoff at lower pressure and temperature, at the cost of pressure/temperature range compared to metal seating

Globe Valve Disc Types:

  • Plug (needle) disc: tapered profile for fine, linear throttling used in bypass and sampling lines.

  • Ball disc: spherical face that seats squarely despite minor misalignment good shutoff with better wear tolerance than a flat disc.

  • Composition disc: flat disc with a replaceable seating ring  tight shutoff at low to moderate pressure, easiest to maintain.

Globe Valve Bonnet Types:

  • Screwed bonnet: threaded into the body. Low cost, for smaller valves and lower pressure service.

  • Union bonnet: union nut attachment internals removable without disturbing pipe joints.

  • Bolted bonnet: bolted flange, standard for larger sizes and higher pressure classes.

  • Welded bonnet: welded to the body for a gasket free joint not field serviceable without cutting the weld.

  • Pressure seal bonnet: sealed by internal system pressure standard for Class 600+ high pressure, high temperature service.

Standards and Certifications:

  • API 600 / API 602: API 600 covers large bolted bonnet steel gate, globe, and check valves API 602 covers smaller (2" and under) compact steel valves. Confirms wall thickness, design proportions, and testing meet an industry baseline.

  • ASME B16.34: sets pressure temperature ratings, materials, and dimensions for flanged, threaded, and welded end valves determines the actual rated pressure class at a given temperature.

  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156: material requirements for sour (H₂S) service to prevent sulfide stress cracking relevant wherever sour gas is present.

Testing and Quality Control:

  • Hydrostatic testing: every valve tested at 1.5x rated working pressure per API 598 to confirm body and seat integrity.

  • Material Test Reports (MTRs): heat traceable chemical and mechanical documentation, not just alloy grade worth asking whether it's standard or a paid add on.

  • Third party inspection: independent verification of dimensional, material, and pressure test compliance standards for larger orders and audit required applications.
