What are AWWA Valves?

AWWA valves are waterworks that have been produced in accordance with AWWA specifications. These define the size, materials, testing, and markings of valves employed in municipal and industrial water supply systems.

  • Ductile iron body and bonnet construction per ASTM A536

  • Working pressure ratings up to 250 psi for gate and butterfly valves

  • Non rising stem (NRS) and outside screw and yoke (OS&Y) stem configurations

  • Flanged, mechanical joint (MJ), push on, and grooved end connections

  • Fusion-bonded epoxy coating per AWWA C550, interior and exterior

  • NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372 certification for potable water contact and lead-free compliance

Function and Working:

  • An AWWA butterfly valve uses a rotating disc mounted on a shaft to throttle or shut off flow with a quarter turn motion.

  • The rubber seated design per AWWA C504 gives a compact, lightweight body footprint compared to gate valves of equal size, making it suited to larger diameter mains where installation space and weight are constrained.

Types of AWWA Valves:

AWWA Air Release Valve - Air release valve, air/vacuum valve, and combination valve in accordance with AWWA C512 standards used to vent trapped air and release vacuum in water transmission and force mains.

AWWA Butterfly Valve - Butterfly valves with rubber seats as per AWWA C504 specification, Class 150B/250B, in wafer, lug, and double flanged designs for isolation and throttling applications in water and wastewater lines.

AWWA Gate Valve - Resilient seated, non rising stem gate valves per AWWA C509/C515 in ductile iron and cast iron, with mechanical joint, push on, or flanged ends for municipal water mains.

AWWA Swing Check Valve - Gate valves with resilient seats and non rising stems as per AWWA C509/C515 specification in ductile iron and cast iron, available in mechanical joint, push on, or flanged connections.
