What is a Balancing Valve?


A balancing valve regulates and equalizes flow rates across the branches of a piping system. Unlike a standard on/off valve, it's calibrated to hold a specific, measurable flow rate so every branch gets its intended share, regardless of distance from the pump or source. 


Working Mechanism of Balancing valve:


  • Adjustable internal restriction (disc, cone, or orifice) sits in the flow path

  • Fluid passing through creates resistance, producing a pressure drop across the valve

  • Closing the restriction increases resistance; opening it decreases resistance

  • Test ports on either side let technicians measure the pressure difference (ΔP)

  • ΔP reading is used to calculate the actual flow rate through the valve

  • Valve position is adjusted until flow rate matches the target

  • Once matched, static valves lock in place; dynamic valves self-adjust to hold that flow rate as conditions change
