What is a Duplex Valve?

A Duplex valve refers to a valve made of a Duplex stainless steel alloy. Duplex stainless steel consists of two phases, austenite and ferrite in equal proportions. The two phase nature of this alloy provides strength and resistance to corrosion that cannot be provided by the single phase stainless steel (austenitic) such as 304 or 316.

Ferrite phase in Duplex steel usually varies between 35% and 65%, which makes Duplex steel alloys twice as strong as regular austenitic stainless steel.

PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) is calculated using %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N), and is used to rank alloy performance in chloride-bearing service.

Quality Assurance:

Each valve is checked for dimensions, subjected to hydrostatic shell and seat tests as per API 598, chemical composition tested using spectrometry, and mechanical tests including tensile test, hardness, and impact test based on heat number/batch number. Documentation includes mill test certificates (MTC as per EN 10204 3.1/3.2), material test reports, non destructive examination reports, and pressure test certificates.
