What is an Orbit Plug Valve?

An orbit plug valve is a quarter turn, non lubricated plug valve engineered with an eccentric cam and guide mechanism. Unlike a conventional sleeved or lubricated plug valve, the orbit design lifts the plug axially off the seat during the opening and closing stroke, so the plug and seat only make contact at the fully closed and fully open positions. 

  • Removes continuous seating friction, reducing operating torque

  • Minimizes seat wear in slurry, particulate, and high solids media

  • Delivers bubble tight, zero leakage shut off at ANSI Class VI standards

  • Supports both isolation (on-off) and throttling duty in the same body

Design and Working Principle:

The orbit plug valve operates through a guided cam track assembly connected to the valve stem. As the handwheel, gearbox, or actuator rotates the stem, the cam first lifts the plug away from the seat rings, then rotates the plug 90° through the flow path, and finally lowers it back onto the seat to achieve a tight metal to metal or soft seated closure.

Core construction elements:

  • Body and bonnet: cast or forged carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, or alloy steel, available in flanged, butt weld, and lug end connections

  • Plug/seat interface: stainless steel or hardfaced (Stellite/Colmonoy overlay) plug with replaceable seat rings for slurry and erosive service

  • Sealing options: metal seated for high temperature and abrasive duty, or elastomer/PTFE seated for chemical and general process isolation

  • Stem sealing: live loaded packing or graphite/PTFE gland packing for fugitive-emission control

  • Actuation: manual gear operator, pneumatic actuator, electric actuator, or hydraulic actuator for remote and automated operation
