Plug valve manufacturers in USA

SVR Global manufactures plug valves in the US lubricated and non-lubricated, concentric and eccentric, in rectangular, round, and venturi port patterns built to API 599 and MSS SP-78, with hydrostatic testing per API 598 and full material traceability. Supplying water and wastewater, oil and gas, chemical processing, and mining applications across the US and international markets.

What Is a Plug Valve?

A plug valve is a quarter-turn valve that consists of a cylindrical or conical plug having a bore drilled through it for controlling the flow of fluids. The operation of turning the plug by 90° causes the bore of the plug to align with or close off the flow path. In contrast to the ball valve, where the seal is achieved by a spherical plug on the seating surface, the plug valve has a seal along the entire surface of the plug with respect to the valve body.

Types of Plug Valve:

  • Eccentric Plug Valve

  • Jacketed Plug Valve

  • Lubricated Plug Valve

  • Non Lubricated Plug Valve

  • Sleeved Plug Valve

Plug Valve Port Patterns:

Port pattern determines flow area, pressure drop, and how well the valve handles solids or slurry.

Pattern

Flow Area

Pressure Drop

Best Suited For

Rectangular port

Smaller than pipe bore

Higher

General isolation service where full bore flow isn't required

Round port

Matches or approaches full pipe bore

Lower

Wastewater and slurry lines, where large solids need to pass without clogging

Venturi port

Reduced, tapered bore

Moderate

Applications where a smaller valve body is acceptable and some pressure drop is tolerable

Lubricated Plug Valves

  • Sealant injected between plug and body to maintain the seal and lower operating torque

  • Lubricant replenished in line, without removing the valve

  • Extends seat life over time

  • Specified where lower torque and long-term seat performance matter more than maintenance simplicity

Non-Lubricated Plug Valves

  • Uses a resilient sleeve or coating (commonly PTFE) instead of injected lubricant

  • Requires less routine maintenance

  • Seat wears faster under dust, dirt, or particulate laden service

  • Preferred where periodic lubrication isn't practical, or the sleeve material handles the process media on its own

Plug Valve Sleeve and Liner Materials:

  • PTFE Sleeve: The body is fitted with a liner made of PTFE, which offers resistance to friction and chemicals, as well as no need for lubrication.

  • Rubber Lined: Rubber lining is used in the body, plug, and face of the flanges, which offer abrasion resistance in services involving abrasive slurries where a metal to metal seal fails easily.

  • Metal Seat (Welded Overlay): Metal seat is used where a PTFE sleeve is not recommended due to temperature and pressure requirements.

Torque and Actuation Requirements:

Plug valves generally require more operating torque than a ball valve of the same size, because the plug seals against the body across a larger surface area rather than a single spherical contact point. This has practical consequences for the buyer:

  • Actuators must be sized to the valve's actual torque curve, not assumed from a similarly sized ball valve

  • Eccentric plug designs reduce torque substantially compared to concentric designs, which affects actuator selection and cost

  • High cycle applications should factor torque into seat and sleeve life expectations, since higher torque accelerates wear on non lubricated designs in particular

Standards and Certifications:

  • API 599 - covers steel and stainless steel plug valves, including design, materials, and testing requirements for flanged, welded, and threaded end valves.

  • MSS SP-78 - covers cast iron plug valves, specifying dimensions, materials, and pressure-temperature ratings for that valve class.

  • API 6D - pipeline valve standard, relevant where plug valves are used in transmission pipeline service rather than plant piping.

  • AWWA C517 - governs eccentric plug valves used in waterworks service, an important standard for water and wastewater applications specifically.

Testing and Quality Control:

  • Hydrostatic testing: every valve pressure tested per API 598 to confirm body and seat integrity before shipment.

  • Material Test Reports (MTRs): heat traceable chemical and mechanical documentation tied to the specific material lot used in that valve ask whether this is provided standard or billed separately.

  • Third party inspection: independent verification of dimensional, material, and pressure-test compliance, typically required for larger orders or applications with audit requirements.

Plug valve Industries and Applications:

  • Water and wastewater - eccentric plug valves for sludge, slurry, and solids laden flow

  • Oil and gas - upstream and midstream isolation and diverting service

  • Chemical and petrochemical - corrosive and abrasive media handled with sleeved or lined plug valves

  • Pulp and paper - slurry and stock handling

  • Mining - abrasive slurry isolation

  • Power generation - plant piping isolation service
