What is a Plunger Valve?

A plunger valve is a regulating valve that controls flow by moving a cylindrical piston axially inside the valve body. As the plunger moves forward or backward, it changes the annular opening through which water passes.

This arrangement allows the valve to stay at intermediate positions for extended periods, making it suitable for continuous throttling rather than simple isolation. The controlled movement of the plunger also helps manage large pressure differences in a more predictable way.

How Flow Changes Through the Valve Stroke

Small Opening

A narrow annular passage creates greater restriction, allowing the valve to reduce flow and absorb a larger share of the pressure drop.

Mid-Stroke

As the plunger retracts, the annular flow area increases gradually, giving the system a smoother change in capacity rather than an abrupt jump.

Fully Open

With the plunger further retracted, the available flow area is maximized and hydraulic resistance through the valve is reduced.
