Gate valve manufacturers in USA

SVR Global designs, and tests gate valves for industrial and municipal systems that require full bore isolation and shutoff. Our facilities operate in the United States, giving customers shorter lead times, direct engineering support, and compliance with domestic sourcing requirements for gate valve manufacturing.

What Is a Gate Valve?

The gate valve is an example of a shut-off valve whereby there is a moveable disc known as the gate that moves vertically in the flow path, allowing full passage of flow or blocking the flow completely. This type of valve is designed for isolation use because it may develop vibrations when partially opened.

How Gate Valve works?

The handwheel or actuator turns, moving the stem up or down. This action, in turn, moves the gate up or down within the valve body. When the valve is open, the gate rests off the flow path to ensure straight-line flow without any turbulence or pressure loss. When the valve is closed, the gate seals onto the valve body.

Components of a Gate Valve Assembly:

  • Valve body - houses the flow passage and gate

  • Gate (wedge or disc) - the moving element that opens or blocks flow

  • Seat - the sealing surface the gate presses against when closed

  • Stem - connects the handwheel or actuator to the gate

  • Bonnet - encloses the stem and gate mechanism, sealing the valve interior

  • Packing - seals the stem against leakage at the bonnet

Types of Gate Valves We Manufacture:

  • Bellow Seal Gate Valve

  • Double Disc Gate Valve

  • Forged Steel gate Valve

  • Non Rising Stem Gate Valve

  • Pressure steel gate valve

  • Rising stem gate valve

Gate Valve Actuation Options:

  • Manual (Handwheel) Operation

The most common actuation method for gate valves, suited to applications where the valve is operated infrequently and doesn't require remote or automated control.

  • Electric Actuated Gate Valve

Utilize an electric motor for opening and closing the valve, which is appropriate for a remote control system that requires automation due to the impracticality of manual control or large valves needing greater torque than manual actuation.

  • Pneumatic Actuated Gate Valve

Use compressed air to operate the gate, offering faster cycling than electric actuation and simple integration into automated control systems.

  • Gear Operator Options

Bevel gear or worm gear operators reduce the torque needed to operate large or high-pressure gate valves manually, making handwheel operation practical on bigger valve sizes.

Materials Used in Gate Valve Construction:

  • Cast Steel and Carbon Steel Gate Valve

Used for standard industrial isolation service where cost efficiency matters more than corrosion resistance, common in oil, gas, and general process piping.

  • Stainless Steel Gate Valve

Used for corrosion resistance in chemical, high-purity, and sour service applications.

  • Bronze and Brass Gate Valve

Used in lower-pressure water and plumbing applications, often in smaller valve sizes.

  • Ductile Iron and Cast Iron Gate Valve

Common in water distribution and wastewater systems due to their durability and cost efficiency at larger sizes.

  • Alloy Options for Corrosive Service

Materials such as Monel, Hastelloy, and duplex stainless steel are used in highly corrosive or high temperature process environments where standard steel or iron would degrade.

Gate Valve Sizing and Specifications:

  • Valve Size Range

Standard offerings typically span 1/2" through 96" nominal pipe size, with smaller sizes common in plumbing and process piping and larger sizes used in water transmission mains.

  • Pressure Class and Temperature Ratings

Gate valve pressure classes commonly range from 125 to 2500 ANSI class, with temperature ratings dependent on body material and seat design, typically from -20°F up to 800°F for standard metal-seated designs.

  • Pressure Seal Bonnet Designs for High Pressure Service

Pressure seal bonnets use process pressure to help maintain the bonnet seal, making them well suited to high pressure, high temperature applications such as steam and power generation service.

Gate Valve Bonnet Types:

  • Bolted Bonnet

Uses bolts to secure the bonnet to the valve body, offering a straightforward design suited to a wide range of pressure classes and easy disassembly for maintenance.

  • Screwed Bonnet

Uses a threaded connection between the bonnet and body, common in smaller valve sizes and lower-pressure applications.

  • Welded Bonnet

Permanently joins the bonnet to the body through welding, eliminating a potential leak path and suited to high-pressure or high temperature service where the valve isn't expected to be disassembled.

  • Union Bonnet

Uses a union nut to connect the bonnet to the body, allowing easier removal for inspection or maintenance while maintaining a tight seal.

Gate Valve Seat Types:

Metal Seated Gate Valve

Use a metal to metal seal between the gate and body seat, suited to high temperature service and applications where elastomer seats would degrade.

Soft Seated (Resilient Seat) Gate Valve

Use an elastomer or rubber seating surface for tighter, lower leakage shutoff at lower pressures and temperatures, common in water distribution valves.

Gate Valve Standards and Ratings:

  • API 600 Compliance

  • ASME B16.34 Pressure-Temperature Ratings

  • AWWA C500/C509/C515 for Water Service

  • MSS SP-70 Standard

  • NSF 61/372 Certification for Potable Water

Installation and Maintenance of Gate Valves:

Wear Points for Gates

The wear points of gate valves include the seat, gate, stem threads, and packing. These are normally due to cycling of the valve, debris in the line, and incorrect partial-opening procedures.

Gate Valve Maintenance Plan

Maintenance activities on the gate valve involve the following: checking the packing; lubricating the stem; and checking the seat condition. Regularly exercising the gate valve through full stroke is necessary to ensure proper functioning.

Troubleshooting Gate Valve Leakage/ Sticking

Common causes of leaks in gate valves include worn or damaged seat, foreign material in between the gate and seat, and worn out packing. Causes of sticking of gate valves include worn stem threads, lack of lubrication, and corrosion in the bonnet.
