What is an Electric Actuated Valve?

Electric actuator valves are made up of a valve body together with an electric actuator which operates the valve automatically. The actuator acts upon a signal generated by the control system to convert electrical energy to rotary motion for quarter turn valves and multi-turn for gate type valves or linear for globe type valves.

Control Signal and Communication Protocols

Electric actuators accept a range of control inputs depending on the plant's control architecture:

  • 4–20mA analog: standard current loop signal for modulating position control

  • Discrete on/off / relay contact: simple open-close-stop commands for isolation duty

  • Modbus (RTU/TCP): digital protocol for integrating position feedback and diagnostics into a control system

  • HART: overlays digital data onto a 4-20mA signal for diagnostics without adding wiring

  • Profibus / Foundation Fieldbus: digital bus protocols used in larger process plants for integrated actuator networks

Specifying the correct protocol up front avoids a mismatch between the actuator and the plant's existing control system. This is one of the most common sourcing mistakes buyers run into.

Power Supply Options

Electric actuators are available across multiple voltage and current configurations:

  • 24VDC / 24VAC - common in instrumentation and low-voltage control loops

  • 120VAC single-phase - standard in general industrial and commercial installations

  • 230/240VAC single-phase - common outside North America and in some US industrial settings

  • 380-480VAC three-phase - used on larger actuators with higher torque/thrust output

Enclosure and Environmental Ratings

  • IP65 / IP67: international ingress protection ratings for dust and water resistance, referenced alongside or instead of NEMA ratings depending on the spec
