Ball Valve Design and Construction:

  • The ball valve is made up of four basic components, body, ball, stem, and seats. 

  • The body encloses the valve and connects it to the pipeline. 

  • The ball is located between the seats, which are pressed tightly against the ball to create seals on both sides of the flow path. 

  • The stem links the ball to the handle outside the body, allowing the transfer of rotary motion, whereas the packing on the stem avoids leaks to the environment. 

  • The body design is different depending on whether it is top entry or side entry.

Ball Valve Bore Configurations:

  • Full port - the bore matches the internal pipe diameter, giving unrestricted flow and lower pressure drop. Common where flow rate matters, such as pigging lines.

  • Reduced port - the bore is one size smaller than the pipe, which lowers cost and valve weight for applications where a slight flow restriction is acceptable.

  • V-port - the ball has a V-shaped notch that allows proportional flow control rather than simple on/off operation.

Ball Valve Pressure Class and Temperature Ratings:

  • Rated Class 150 to Class 2500 under ASME B16.34, with exact class depending on body material and seat type

  • PTFE seated valves operate up to approximately 400°F, suited for standard industrial and chemical service

  • Metal seated valves extend range to roughly 800°F for high temperature service like steam and thermal oil

  • Cryogenic variants available for applications well below 0°F

  • Cryogenic designs use extended bonnets to keep packing away from the cold process fluid, preventing seal failure and ice buildup

End Connection Options:

Flanged and weld end connections are typical for larger pipeline sizes, while threaded connections are common on smaller bore, lower pressure lines.

Manual and Automated Ball Valves:

Smaller valves are usually operated by a hand lever, while larger or high torque valves use a gearbox for controlled, lower effort operation. For remote or automated systems, Pneumatic and electric actuators mount directly to the valve stem, allowing the valve to open or close on a signal from a control system. Actuator sizing depends on the valve's breakaway and running torque at the specified pressure.
