What Is a Pressure Relief Valve and How Does It Work?

There is a pressure relief valve installed at some point in the pipe, vessel, or apparatus, which checks the pressure inside the pipe. When pressure rises above the set value of the valve, the valve disk is lifted from the seating by the internal spring or pilot action, and fluid/gas is released via the outlet port. The pressure reduction causes reseating of the disk and closure of the valve.

  1. Set point detection - the valve stays closed under normal operating pressure.

  2. Discharge - once pressure exceeds the set threshold, the valve opens to vent the surplus.

  3. Reseating - the valve closes again once pressure normalizes, without manual reset.

  • Orientation - most relief valves must be installed vertically to allow the disc to seat properly and prevent debris buildup

  • Inlet piping - kept as short as possible with minimal pressure drop, since excess resistance at the inlet can cause chattering

  • Discharge piping - sized to avoid excess back pressure and routed to a safe location, especially for hazardous or high temperature media

  • Testing frequency - many facilities test annually, though intervals vary based on service severity, insurance requirements, and state or federal boiler and pressure vessel regulations

  • Bench testing vs. in-line testing - bench testing on a test stand gives the most accurate set pressure verification in line testing is faster but less precise

  • Documentation - every test and repair should be logged with date, technician, set pressure verified, and any parts replaced, since this record is often requested during inspections
