What is a Slip On Flange?

Slip-on flange, also known as SO flange, is a bored flange that has an inner diameter somewhat bigger than the outside diameter of the joining pipe, which allows the pipe to slip in before carrying out the double fillet welds on the hub and face. This makes installation much easier and quicker especially when dealing with straight piping runs, branches, and equipment nozzles.

Core Functions of Slip On the Flange:

  • Pipe to pipe connection: Used to create a bolted and gasketed joint between two pipe spools, enabling disconnection and inspection, cleaning, or changing out of pipe sections without pipe cutting.

  • Pipe to equipment connection: Used to terminate piping runs to pumps, vessels, tanks, and skid-mounted equipment nozzles, using the same counter-flanged drilling and facing of the equipment.

  • Valve termination: Connects flanged end valves into the pipeline, allowing isolation and maintenance of the valve without disturbing adjacent pipe.

  • Load transfer at the weld joint: Transfers axial, bending, and torsional loads from the pipe wall into the flange body through the double fillet weld at the hub and face.

  • Sealing interface: The machined face (raised face, flat face, or ring groove for RTJ) provides the contact surface for a gasket, maintaining a pressure-tight seal under the applied bolt load.

  • Bolt load distribution: The bolt hole pattern and flange thickness distribute clamping force evenly around the joint circumference, preventing localized gasket leakage.

  • Alignment tolerance absorption: Because the bore is oversized relative to the pipe OD, the flange can accommodate minor pipe end squareness or diameter variation before welding, simplifying spool fabrication.

  • Line blind and spacer accommodation: Acts as the mating flange face when spectacle blinds, spacers, or line blinds are inserted for isolation during shutdowns or hydrotesting.

Manufacturing Process at SVR Global:

Process Flow-

  1. Raw Material Procurement - billets sourced with certified chemical and mechanical test reports

  2. Forging - open die or closed die forging to near-net shape under controlled temperature to align grain flow

  3. Heat Treatment - normalizing, annealing, or quenching and tempering depending on grade requirement

  4. CNC Machining - precision boring, facing, and bolt hole drilling to ASME B16.5/B16.47 tolerances

  5. Surface Finishing - serrated, smooth, or spiral finish on raised face per customer specification

  6. Marking - heat number, grade, size, class, and manufacturer identification stamped per ASME B16.5 Annex requirements

  7. Final Inspection & Packing - corrosion inhibitor coating, export grade wooden case or pallet packing

Quality Control and Testing:

SVR Global performs the following inspection and testing protocols on slip-on flanges before dispatch:

  • Chemical composition analysis (spectrometer testing)

  • Testing mechanical strength - Tensile strength, Yield strength, Elongation, Hardness test (Brinell/Rockwell)

  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT) according to ASTM A388 to detect internal discontinuity

  • Dye Penetrant Test (DPT)/Magnetic Particle Test (MPT) to detect surface defects

  • Positive Material Identification (PMI) for alloy and stainless steel grades

  • Dimensional inspection using CMM and bore gauges against ASME B16.5/B16.47 tolerances

  • Third-party inspection coordination TPI, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, SGS, or client nominated agency
