What is a Pneumatic Actuated Butterfly Valve?

A butterfly valve operated with pneumatic actuation consists of a butterfly type disc and housing with an integrated pneumatic actuator that operates on compressed air to rotate the valve disc. With such a configuration, remote/automated operation is possible without any manual operation using a handwheel or lever.

How Pneumatic Actuation Controls the Valve Disc?

Compressed air enters the actuator chamber, driving a piston or rack and pinion mechanism that rotates the valve stem. This stem rotation turns the internal disc, opening or closing the flow path depending on air direction and actuator configuration.

Quarter Turn Operation Explained?

Butterfly valves operate on a 90-degree rotation between fully open and fully closed positions. This quarter turn action allows fast cycling compared to multi-turn valve types, making pneumatic actuation well suited for applications requiring frequent or rapid valve operation.

How a Pneumatic Actuator Works?

  • Spring Return Actuator

Uses air pressure to move the valve to one position (open or closed) while an internal spring returns it to the opposite position automatically if air supply is lost. This fail-safe behavior is specified based on system safety requirements fail-open or fail-close.

  • Double Acting Actuator

Requires air pressure to move the valve in both directions (open and close), offering faster cycling and higher torque output compared to spring-return designs, but without automatic fail-safe positioning if air supply is interrupted.

  • Air Supply and Positioner Integration

Actuators connect to a compressed air supply line, typically regulated to a specified pressure range. Positioners can be added to convert an on/off actuator into a modulating control device, allowing precise throttling based on an input signal from a control system.

Types of Butterfly Valve Body Design:

  • Pneumatic Actuated Flanged Butterfly Valve-
    Integral flanged ends with pneumatic actuation for automated control in larger diameter, higher pressure lines.

  • Pneumatic Actuated Lug Butterfly Valve-
    Lug-style body with independent bolting, supporting automated dead end service isolation.

  • Pneumatic Actuated Wafer Butterfly Valve-
    Compact, flange mounted design with pneumatic actuation for low to moderate pressure systems.

Disc and Seat Configurations:

1)Concentric Disc Design-

The disc shaft passes through the centerline of the disc and seat, offering a cost effective design suited for standard pressure applications with soft seated sealing.

2)Double Offset Disc Design-

Shifts the shaft position off center in two planes, reducing seat contact and wear during operation, extending seat life compared to concentric designs.

3)Triple Offset Disc Design-

Adds a third offset to the seating geometry, producing a metal to metal, torque seated shutoff suited for high pressure, high temperature, and zero leakage requirements.
