What is a Pneumatic Actuated Valve?

Pneumatically operated valves are valve assemblies that open, close, or regulate flows with the use of compressed air rather than manually or through electrical actuation. The compressed air causes the actuator to move the valve stem via rotary or linear movement.

Unlike Electric actuated valve or manually operated valves, pneumatic actuators rely on compressed air rather than motors or handwheels for operation. 

How Pneumatic Actuators Operate ?

The compressed air enters into the actuator cylinder via the solenoid valve or through the air line. The pressure causes a movement of the piston that is placed either on rack and pinion or Scotch yoke systems. It also causes a movement of the diaphragm in Diaphragm actuator, causing rotation or sliding of the valve stem.

H2- Components of a Pneumatic Valve Actuator System

  • Valve body - houses the flow control element (ball, disc, plug, or diaphragm)

  • Actuator - converts air pressure into mechanical motion

  • Solenoid valve - controls air direction and flow to the actuator

  • Positioner - regulates actuator position for modulating control

  • Air supply line - delivers compressed air, typically 60-120 psi

  • Limit switches - confirm valve position (open/closed) to a control system

Types of Pneumatic Actuated Valves We Manufacture:

1)Pneumatic Ball Valve

Use a rotating ball with a bore to control flow. Common in applications needing tight shutoff and quick quarter turn operation.

2)Pneumatic Butterfly Valve

Operate with the use of a disk that rotates about a shaft. These valves are lightweight and compact, ideal for large diameter pipes when weight is a factor.

3)Pneumatic Diaphragm Valve:

Use a flexible diaphragm to control flow, isolating the process media from the actuator mechanism. Common in slurry, corrosive, or particulate heavy flows.

4)Pneumatic Globe Valve:

Provide precise flow throttling through a linear stem motion, used where modulating control accuracy matters more than speed.

5)Pneumatic Gate Valve:

Use a sliding gate for full bore, unrestricted flow when open. Typically specified for on/off service rather than throttling.

6)Pneumatic Plug Valve:

Use a cylindrical or tapered plug with a bore, offering straight through flow and durability in abrasive or high solids applications.

Materials Used in Pneumatic Actuated Valve Construction:

1)Stainless Steel Valve Body

Used for corrosion resistance in chemical, marine, and high purity process applications.

2)Carbon Steel Valve Body

Used for standard industrial service where cost efficiency matters more than corrosion resistance.

3)Brass and Bronze Options

Used in lower pressure applications, often for water or compressed air distribution systems.

Pneumatic Actuated Valve Sizing and Specifications:

1)Valve Size Range

Standard offerings typically span 1/4" through 24" nominal pipe size, with custom sizing available for larger or non standard bore requirements.

2)Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Valve pressure classes commonly range from 150 to 2500 ANSI class, and temperature ratings depend on body material and seat/seal composition typically from -20°F up to 400°F for standard elastomer seals, higher for metal-seated designs.

3)Air Supply and Cv Requirements

Actuator sizing depends on required torque, available air supply pressure (typically 60-100 psi), and the valve's Cv (flow coefficient), which determines flow capacity at a given pressure drop.

Pneumatic Actuated Valve Standards and Ratings:

1)NEMA Enclosure Ratings

Actuator enclosures are rated under NEMA standards (such as NEMA 4 or NEMA 4X) to indicate resistance to dust, water, and corrosion in outdoor or washdown environments.

2)IP65/IP67 Ingress Protection

International ingress protection ratings indicate an actuator's resistance to dust and water intrusion, with IP67 offering protection against temporary submersion.

3)NACE Compliance for Corrosive Environments

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance addresses material requirements for valves exposed to sour (H2S containing) service in oil and gas applications.


Installation and Maintenance of Pneumatic Actuated Valve:

1)Common Wear Points

Actuator seals, valve seats, and stem packing wear from repeated cycling and moisture or particulate contamination in the air supply.

2)Preventive Maintenance Schedule

Routine maintenance includes air filter checks, seal and seat inspection, lubrication, and periodic cycle testing.

3)Troubleshooting Actuator Failure

Common causes include low air pressure, contaminated air lines, worn seals, or a failed solenoid valve. Check air
pressure and solenoid function first.
